Notary services are available, free of charge, to patrons of the Harris County Hainsworth Law Library. To receive assistance from a notary, please visit the library’s front desk during our hours of operation. Fill out your legal document or form but leave it unsigned. You will sign the document when the notary is present and has administered an oath. Individuals with a disability, who are unable to sign or make a mark on a document, may receive accommodations as designated by Section 406.0165, Texas Government Code.
A valid photo identification is required for all transactions. Certain forms, like a Power of Attorney, require that the agent and the person designating the agent be physically present in front of the notary. To prove your identity, the Law Library will accept the following:
A valid picture identification issued by the federal government that contains both your photo, name, and signature, such as a U.S. Passport, U.S. Military ID, or a Permanent Resident ID issued by USCIS; or
Any valid state government issued picture identification that contains both your photo, name, and signature. Examples may include a Driver’s License or Identification Card.
Please note that a current foreign passport may only be used for the purposes of a deed or other real estate transactions.
Public Notaries at the Law Library may not give legal advice and will therefore not assist with the following:
A notary public will not recommend a form, and
A notary public will not determine which type of notarial certificate should be attached to a document.
