March is Women’s History Month, and the theme for 2021 is “Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to be Silenced.” Women’s History Month started as a week-long celebration in 1982, which transitioned to a month in March 1987. For further details and executive and legislative documents, “The Law Library of Congress has compiled guides to commemorative observations, including a comprehensive inventory of the Public Laws, Presidential Proclamations and congressional resolutions related to Women’s History Month.”
Harris County Robert W. Hainsworth Law Library has an on-demand CLE recording of its 19th Amendment Centennial Symposium from last August, entitled “Votes for Texas Women,” which is available here. The symposium honors a century of progress toward voting rights for women. Mariann Sears, the first woman to serve as director of the Harris County Robert W. Hainsworth Law Library, welcomed accomplished women from Houston's legal community to discuss the history of voting rights for women and the importance of inclusion in law and government. Note: This recording is accredited by the State Bar of Texas for 2.0 hours of CLE and 1.0 hour of ethics from October 22, 2020, through September 22, 2021.
Throughout March, Ex Libris Juris will continue to feature posts on various aspects of women’s history, which started with “Digitally Celebrating Women’s History” on March 2, 2021.
