Harris County recently issued a winter weather recovery alert through its ReadyHarris.org website. It provides some avenues of assistance for those affected by last month’s winter storm. Here are some highlights:
Because Harris County is included in the Presidential Disaster Declaration, residents may be eligible for assistance from FEMA and the Small Business Administration. Officials recommend, however, that insured residents contact their insurer prior to applying for federal aid for any property damage sustained.
Call 2-1-1 for help with basic needs, such as food, clothing, or housing.
Disaster Unemployment Assistance may be available for those who qualify. Please contact the Texas Workforce Commission.
Residents who have storm debris may drop it off at one of four designated locations. Please see ReadyHarris.org for more details.

Community partner Lone State Legal Aid has developed a guide so that residents can understand more fully how FEMA can help them recover from the winter storm. Find answers to questions about rent, temporary housing, repairs, and more.
The City of Houston and Harris County have also established the Houston Harris County Winter Storm Relief Fund to help provide relief where federal or state aid is unavailable. If you need help or if you would like to donate, please visit the website at winterstormrelieffund.org.
