Each October, we celebrate “pro bono” work. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, “In Latin, pro bono publico means ‘for the public good;’ in English we generally shorten the phrase to pro bono.” Houston Volunteer Lawyers (HVL) is in the midst of its Harvest Peer-to-Peer Campaign, in which they are asking individuals to engage in pro bono efforts by giving their time or treasure.

Primarily, the programs are designed to facilitate access to affordable housing and transportation, while also expanding opportunities for social connection and community enrichment. The HC CSD and its affiliated websites “uplift communities and…deliver programs aimed at assisting with rent, mortgage, and utility costs.” Additional programs are available for Harris County residents who are experiencing (or are at risk of experiencing) homelessness, those in need of disaster recovery resources, immigrants, and veterans.
