Advancing Equity at the Intersection of Race, Mental Illness, and Criminal Justice Involvement by Attorney Deanna M. Adams highlights the complexity of the intersection of race, mental illness, and criminal justice involvement. Adams believes that in order to advance equity within our criminal justice system we need to look at the intersection of race and mental illness. The book addresses what attorneys can do to “improve both health and justice outcomes for people of diverse backgrounds who have mental illness”.
The book is separated into five sections as follows:
1. Foundations
2. How Criminal Justice Professionals Can Help Advance Equity
3. Equity on Both Sides of the Adversarial System
4. Advancing Equity across the Criminal Justice Continuum
5. Moving from Theory to Action
While this topic can elicit strong reactions (guilt, anger, etc.) it is the author’s intent to “provide information that assists attorneys in developing tangible skills and a conceptual framework for working on cases involving people of diverse backgrounds who have mental illness.” If you would like to read more about this topic, we have Advancing Equity at the Intersection of Race, Mental Illness, and Criminal Justice Involvement available to read while visiting the law library in our Criminal Section. Our librarians would be happy to direct you to this title when you come in to visit.
