Thursday, October 26, is Vote Early Day! We at the Harris County Robert W. Hainsworth Law Library are official partners in this annual non-partisan effort. Our goal in joining up with this worthy cause is to encourage early voting and to ensure that busy schedules, Election Day lines, or last minute problems won’t stop you from sharing your voice. Below, we are providing access to the information and resources you need to be informed about where, when, and how to cast your ballot and be counted in Harris County.
Voting is a protected right that extends to all eligible members of a community. Casting a ballot in support of a favored candidate, initiative, or cause is how we, as constituents, raise our voices and assert our right to be heard. It’s the mechanism we use to register our concerns and to demonstrate that our opinions matter. As supporters of Vote Early Day, we share with the voters of Harris County our faith in the electoral process, a system designed to ensure that the impact of our actions is felt in the communities to which we belong.
Statistics show that people are more likely to vote when reminded to do so by someone in their circle, especially when that someone is a trusted source, and few public institutions are as trusted as the library. Elections and libraries are important parts of civic life. Libraries, themselves, often serve as polling locations for the very reason that they are welcoming, nonthreatening spaces where diversity of thought is celebrated, and where the free exchange of ideas and expression is not only encouraged, but defended and upheld.
Though the Harris County Hainsworth Law Library, itself, is not a designated polling place, the Conference Center at Congress Plaza — the building we share with Harris County Attorney, Christian Menefee, at 1019 Congress Street — will indeed be open for any and all eligible voters to exercise their civic right. It’s a popular, central site for voters in the downtown area, and quite the place to see and be seen casting your ballot in Harris County. Hope to see you (early!) at the polls.
