History of Veterans Day
November 11th is a national holiday honoring American veterans of all wars. The day was originally established as Armistice Day back in 1919 to commemorate the end of World War I. Since 1919, events like World War II and the Korean War influenced the amendment of the holiday by “striking out the word ‘Armistice’ and inserting in lieu thereof the word ‘Veterans.’” (Public Law 83-380).
Veterans Day was not always celebrated on November 11th. For a brief period, the Uniform Holiday Bill of 1968 impacted the celebration of this holiday by ordering that the day be celebrated on a Monday to ensure three-day weekends for government employees. (Public Law 90-363). This change was soon reversed, after causing displeasure among many people who felt that November 11th held historic and patriotic significance.
