The American Bar Association’s (ABA) National Celebration of Pro Bono is the week of October 23-29, 2022. According to the ABA, “pro bono work is a professional responsibility and an individual ethical commitment of each lawyer.” Every October, legal organizations across the U.S. are encouraged to participate in the National Celebration of Pro Bono week.
This fall, the Houston Volunteer Lawyers (HVL) are focusing on guardianship matters in need of pro bono legal aid. Licensed attorneys wishing to take on a pro bono case can see the list of available cases here.
Five Reasons Why Guardianship Should be Your Next Pro Bono Case by HVL
Rewarding
You are helping parents care for their disabled children as they enter adulthood. Many adult children’s medical wellbeing depends on their parents being able to communicate with their doctors and make decisions on their behalf. Parents cannot complete the guardianship process Pro Se, they must have an attorney.
Uncontested
All of HVL guardianship cases are uncontested.
Friendly courts
Harris County Probate Courts love HVL volunteers! Great for non-litigators or those with limited court experience.
Mentorship
HVL provides templates and mentorship throughout the process.
Skills and Experience
The State Bar requires attorneys to take a 4-hour CLE, which gives a thorough overview of the law. Most of the work is preparing pleadings and guiding the family through the process. Perfect for busy attorneys who don’t have a lot of time.
In addition, HVL are hosting free CLEs to all pro bono attorneys. View the schedule here to register for an upcoming free CLE.
