Texas Bar Today, a publication of the State Bar of Texas, selects their Top Ten Blog Posts on a weekly basis. Ex Libris Juris, the official blog of the Harris County Law Library, was featured eleven times in 2020 on this top ten list, as follows:

  • 4/24/2020: Dig It! Trees and the Law – A compilation of resources about trees and the law in recognition of Earth Day and Arbor Day.

  • 4/30/2020: Rover to the Rescue – A review of the April 27, 2020, executive order regarding the reopening of businesses and services in Texas, and information regarding the training of dogs to detect people who don’t yet know that they may be infected with the coronavirus.

  • 5/14/2020: Coronavirus Scams: Fraud in the Time of a Pandemic – Statistics of fraud complaints related to COVID-19, common scams, how to report a concern, and tips from the FTC on how to protect yourself.

  • 5/21/2020: To the Skies – An overview of the history of aviation law in honor of the anniversaries of the nonstop solo flights of Charles Lindbergh (1922) and Amelia Earhart (1932) across the Atlantic Ocean.

  • 5/29/2020: Holding it Together – All things paper clips for National Paper Clip Day, including legal cases involving these tiny helpers.

  • 6/25/2020: Does Privacy Still Exist Among Coronavirus? – Privacy laws present a challenge for businesses because employers are required to balance the protection of an infected employee’s privacy rights with the health and welfare of the possibly affected employees.

  • 7/8/2020: Texas Online Public Information – Courts (TOPICs) – The Supreme Court of Texas revised the rules governing citation by publication and mandated the Office of Court Administration (OCA) to create and maintain a “public information internet website” that would house citations or other public notices that parties are required to publish under court rules.

  • 7/29/2020: COVID-19 Waivers of Liability – A list of resources to help a person decide if they should sign a waiver of liability to enter a business for damages that may result from a possible exposure to the coronavirus, as well as resources for businesses on drafting such a waiver.

  • 9/25/2020: In Celebration of Punctuation – For National Punctuation Day, we compiled a list of resources that highlight the important role of punctuation and grammar in the drafting and interpretation of the law.

  • 10/29/2020: The Spirit of the Law – This post features spooky case law recaps and a description of The Law of Cadavers and of Burial and Burial Places by Percival E. Jackson. We also remember a beloved colleague, Ben Pride, who loved assembling the Law Library’s Halloween book art.

  • 12/17/2020: Service Dogs Only – Not Snakes – on Planes: Dept. of Transportation Issues New Rule - The Department of Transportation issued a new regulation on Dec. 2, 2020, defining a service animal as “a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of a person with a disability,” and specifically excluding emotional support animals.
