Statutes, Laws, and Ordinances

The words statutes, laws, and ordinances are somewhat interchangeable. They all describe written rules promulgated by governmental entities that govern the actions and conduct of people living in that jurisdiction. Laws can be drafted and enacted by federal and state legislatures as well as by county and city governments. In most cases, laws coming from the state and federal legislatures are referred to as statutes while laws issued by city governments are generally called ordinances.
