Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated during a 30-day period that runs from September 15 to October 15. The theme for this year is “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation.” The commemoration of Hispanic Heritage began in 1968 as a Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon B. Johnson. In 1988, Public Law Number 100-402 increased the celebration from one week to one month.
This year the Law Library will highlight historical legal cases and legislature that have impacted the Hispanic community. A display in the library includes references to San Antonio ISD v. Rodriguez, Pecan Shellers Strike, and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Local community leaders and their engagement with Harris County communities are also featured.
A copy of this year’s Presidential Proclamation on National Hispanic Heritage Month, 2022, is also available for viewing in the Law Library display.
